How long do I wear the Stockings for?
Compression stockings are worn for two weeks. Many clients chose to keep them on when showering as they find them easier to dry than to get on and off.
What sort of painkillers will I need?
We usually prescribe Voltaren to use for the first 5 days . We advise patients to take this regularly for the first few days. They are well tolerated although Voltaren should not be taken by patients with a history of stomach ulceration.
Can I use ‘natural’ remedies?
Yes, certainly. We find that a lot of people say that Arnica taken as either tablets or cream can help to reduce the bruising after surgery.
How long will I need to be off work after EVLT?
Latest studies suggest the average time off work is 3 days after EVLT – compared with 12 days after open varicose vein surgery. Many patients are able to return to work immediately
When can I drive after EVLT?
Yes. We send everyone for a 30 minute walk immediately after treatment and then the majority of patients drive themselves home. If you know that you can feel faint after medical procedures then you should bring someone with you to drive for you.
When can I go to the gym / start exercise after EVLT?
We recommend avoiding heavy exercise for 2 weeks while the healing process takes place. We encourage plenty of walking - but going for a stroll, not loading a ruck-sack and striding up to the top of a hill for a yodel!
What follow up procedures are necessary?
There are usually two treatment sessions (but as many as needed at the end of the day). At six weeks there is a follow up check to assess recovery, and sometimes relieve 'blood trapping' to reduce lumpiness.
The treatment paid for covers treatment of any new vein appearing in the first 12 months. There is a check up one year after treatment.
How soon can I fly after EVLT?
Short haul flights are no problem. Long haul flights should probably be avoided for 3 – 4 weeks after surgery.
